Unveiling a New Grading Approach for Our Young Learners in USD #243 Lebo-Waverly

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We’re thrilled to share an innovative grading concept that we’re rolling out for students from Kindergarten to Second Grade: Standards Based Grading, or SBG for short.

The Rationale Behind the Move

The old-style letter grades are a blunt tool. They don't show the intricate landscape of learning. SBG, on the other hand, is backed by academic research and provides a holistic view of your child's academic journey. It replaces the 'grade chase' with a focus on meaningful learning experiences.

Studies prove that conventional grades can be demotivating and can limit students’ willingness to explore challenging subjects. SBG puts the spotlight on actual skills and progress, fueling a type of motivation that comes from within the student.

The Early Stages are Crucial

The early academic years lay the groundwork for future learning and social interactions. By giving you transparent and precise feedback, we can work together to guide your child on the path to success.

Note: Students from grades 3-5 will keep the traditional letter grades.

Decoding SBG

“1”: A “1” indicates the student is demonstrating a beginning level of proficiency with the grade level standards. The student requires additional time, support, intervention or monitoring.

“2”: A “2” indicates the student is progressing toward applying and achieving the grade level standards. The student may require additional time, support, or monitoring.

“3”: A “3” indicates the student is independently applying and achieving the grade level standards. The student demonstrates learning and makes relevant connections.

“4”: A “4” indicates the student is extending learning and concepts of Grade level standards. The student independently applies learning and makes connections in new & innovative ways.

The Social and Emotional Angle

We are also assessing students on social-emotional skills, important markers for overall well-being and future success.

“1” Not yet demonstrated skill with or without support.

“2” Requires additional support to demonstrate skill.

“3” Demonstrates skill regularly with minimal prompting.

“4” Independently demonstrates skill most of the time.

What If My Child is a High Performer?

Rest assured, SBG is not about downplaying excellence but rather about providing a full picture of your child's skills and needs. The emphasis is on comprehensive learning rather than just racking up top grades.

A Kid-Friendly Explanation

To put it in kid terms: imagine learning SBG is like learning to ride a bike. A “1” is using training wheels, a “3” is biking independently, and a “4” means you’re popping wheelies.

Let’s Embrace this Change Together

Change is always a learning curve, for us too. But as we navigate this new terrain, our priority remains the same: to better articulate the how, what, and why of student learning.
