Driver Education Classroom
Successful completion of the classroom consists of passing all objectives based on classroom presentations, the textbook “Drive Right”, and the Kansas Driver's Handbook. All objectives except the Chapter 7 Test (Alcohol, Other Drugs, and Driving), must be completed with at least 80% correct. Objective 7 must be completed with 100%. The Kansas Driver's Handbook objective must be completed before the application for the Driver Education Permit is submitted and must be passed with at least 80%.
Behind-The-Wheel
During the first week of classroom, students will be assigned a week of behind-the-wheel time. Each student will drive for approximately 6-8 hours during their assigned week. Students must complete 35 behind-the-wheel objectives without coaching or help to complete the driving portion of the class. If the student doesn’t complete the behind-the-wheel objectives in their assigned week, additional time will be scheduled up to a total of 12 hours.
Student License
Each student will receive a driver's education permit once they complete the application, which will be done in class. Students must pass the Kansas Drivers Handbook test with at least an 80% before application can take place. Included in the Driver Ed permit is a permit that allows students to drive with a parent or guardian. This permit can be sent home with the student upon request of the parent or guardian.
Students must have an instructional permit for at least 1 year before they will be eligible for a restricted license. The Parent/Guardian permit can be used to obtain an instructional permit. The student must take the Parent/Guardian permit along with a birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency, and a parent or guardian to a DMV location. The student will be required to pass an eye exam. Once all of these requirements are met, an instructional permit will be issued.
Students completing the classroom and behind-the-wheel parts of Driver Education will receive a certificate of completion. This certificate will allow students to obtain a Restricted License once they become 15 years of age and have held an Instructional Permit for one year. If your student isn’t 15 by the end of the class, PLEASE put the Certificate of Completion away in a safe place until they are.
If a student lives on a working farm of at least 20 acres, they are eligible for a farm permit. The student must take a birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency, and a parent or guardian to a DMV location. The student will be required to pass an eye exam. Once all of these requirements are met, a Farm Permit will be issued.
