Do worms really eat dirt? Mrs. Davies’ fourth grade students have been worm watching in the classroom and discovering the critical role earthworms play in decomposing dead material and releasing nutrients into the soil. During a two-part activity, students first made close observations of worms. Then, conducted a simple experiment with multiple trials to figure out if worms prefer dry or wet soil. #mysteryscience #wormwatchers

Dear USD 243 Families, I would like to welcome everyone back for the 2020-21 school year. Our sincere hope is to provide an educational experience that is as close to normal as possible for you and your family. The best way I can think of to keep school close to normal is to make individual choices that help mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 virus. USD 243 and Coffey County have developed many plans, procedures, and policies to best protect ourselves and others around us. Most, if not all, of the planning documents can be found on the District and School Website. Our leaders have tried to anticipate as many scenarios as possible that might be cause for concern to our students, staff, and families. School will definitely look and feel different. In order to keep our schools open and to keep each other as safe as possible, we feel these procedures are extremely important. Some people may not agree with all of the requirements that have been developed. These procedures are necessary if schools are to open and to continue to operate as normally as possible. Please try to be flexible and understanding as we navigate these uncharted waters. Most people agree that children need to return to school. Our hope is that these special considerations are not long-term. Where things go from here is up to all of us. Please keep your child home if they are sick with a Fever, Cough, etc. Communicate with the School or your health care provider if you have questions about an ill child. We do have some essential guidance and protocols available on USD243KS.org The school district has adopted several safety measures that are recommended by the Coffey County Health Department, Kansas Health Department, as well as, the CDC. Safety Measures include but are not limited to: wearing face masks indoors while at school, social distancing greater than 6 feet, temperature screenings of students and staff, better air filtration and circulation, and many more measures that are too numerous to mention. Once again, it is our goal to be in school in person as normal as possible. We can do this together. We need everyone’s support. Cooperation is critical. If you have any questions please contact your child’s school attendance center. Sincerely, Corey Reese Corey Reese, Superintendent Lebo-Waverly USD 243

Don't have an "Access Code"? Si no puede ver este articulo en Español, puede cambiar el idioma en la esquina inferior derecha. Access codes are used to link a student to his/her re-enrollment record. Most schools will "claim" this code on behalf of parents to save them time. If your school did not send you an "Access Code" by email/text, then you most likely don't need one. You simply need to login to your account and complete the forms. If you don't have an access code but it's time to Re-Enroll your student, here's what you can do: 1. Login to your account. On the Student Dashboard look for the green Re-enroll button under the Actions section (on devices with a small screen or on a mobile device you may have to scroll to the right). If you see the button, you are in the correct account. Click Re-Enroll to complete your student's forms. Do NOT click the "Add returning Student" button as you will be prompted to enter an access code. 2. If you don't see the student's name and Re-enroll button under the Student Dashboard then you are in the wrong account. Please log out and contact your school for the correct username. 3. If you did receive an access code, check out our guide here on Re-Enrolling with an access code.

We have several bugs to still work out of our online enrollment process! Please let us know if you are having problems and what those problems are. Here is a temporary fix for one of the problems! KSHSAA COVID-19 Form. We are in the process of fixing it, but have to wait for the host company to unlock the form. In the meantime, Right under the title, KSHSAA COVID-19, there is an empty box. Please put in that box, Yes my child has COVID-!9 or NO my child has covid. You will then be asked later in the form, if your child has tested positive or had a positive test. Check Yes or No which every applies. If you check NO, enter today's day in the space for testing date. Then you must check symptoms. If your child doesn't have COVID, CHECK EVERY SYMPTOM! We will know that because you said NO in the 1st box, and checked NO and entered today's date, and checked all symptoms, you child doesn't have COVID. At the bottom, there are 3 boxes to sign, the first box, PLEASE ENTER PARENT'S INITIALS! THANKS FOR BEING STAYING WITH US AS WE WORK OUT THE BUGS! ALSO, for students not taking part in athletics, please go ahead and complete the athletic forms.

2020-2021 Enrollment Options The Board of Education approved a plan for the beginning of the school year where parents will have the choice to decide if their child will attend school on-site in a face to face manner or remotely from their own home. When you enroll, please select the learning delivery model that best meets the needs of your family. Option 1 On-Site Learning: Students attending school on-site at Lebo Elementary or Lebo Jr/Sr High School will follow a traditional school schedule and attend classes five days a week. Option 2 Remote Learning: Students attending school remotely will be expected to complete their learning online each day. The Kansas State Board of Education recently released specific requirements for students who will participate as learners through an at-home remote learning environment. These requirements will include: *6.5 hours of daily participation by the student in learning activities *Daily participation by the student in teacher-initiated contact *Daily remote learning log completion *Participation in the same assessments as students who are attending school in-person. For additional information regarding enrollment options and/or to view the Daily Remote Learning Log, please refer to the USD243 Lebo/Waverly 2020-2021 Re-Opening Guide. Lebo-Waverly Students, Parents, Patrons, and Families, A lot has happened in the days since the special Board Meeting on July 27th in regards to reopening the schools. We appreciated the feedback from the parents and the support provided by the Board of Education. Our goal is to provide the best learning environment for our students and to accommodate your concerns throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The administrative teams have been developing a plan for the district that will be presented at the August 10th board meeting. However, we realize that parents, guardians and students are wanting information. The following information reflects only a small portion of the document. School Start Date: August 27, 2020 Learning Options: USD 243 will offer on-site, “traditional”, classroom instruction. Remote learning (virtual learning) using Google Classroom The option chosen by the family will be selected for the entire first semester of school with the requirements of 360 minutes(6.5 hours) of daily academic learning. If school buildings are completely shut down, due to the virus spreading, ALL education will become remote learning. All grade levels will use the Google Classroom platform for providing instruction. Safety Measures: All staff and students will have their temperature taken upon entry to the buildings. If a student or staff member is running a temperature over 100 degrees they will not be allowed to attend school. Hand sanitizers are located in each classroom and throughout the buildings. Hourly hand washing will take place. Additional bottle filling stations have been installed in the district buildings. All water fountains will be disconnected. Please supply a water bottle with a secure lid for the school year. Students and staff will wear masks at school. Children with medical issues and/or special needs will be accommodated. Students under 5 year of age will not need to wear a mask. Teacher Education: August 10th will be the first day of teacher in-service instruction and planning. Some topics to be covered include: social/emotional needs of students and staff; reopening classrooms after the long shut down; disinfecting classrooms; Google Classroom; teaching in a remote learning environment; and many more. Our district is concerned for our students, parents, families, and staff at this time. We are in the middle of a pandemic that hasn’t been seen for a very long time. Paying attention to guidelines set by the state and local health department and data trends will be our focus for the upcoming months of school. We know the success of our students depends on a productive partnership between the district, our families and the community. Your continued support will ensure our students receive the best education we can provide them, regardless of these circumstances. Respectfully, District Leadership Team Corey Reese, Duane Ford, Susan Wildeman, Libby Self, and Bethany Thomas

ECKAN Head Start provides FREE early childhood development services to families who qualify. Services vary in each county and community, based upon the needs identified through a community assessment process. Families can sign up for the following service options: Home-Based 90-minute, weekly home visits for families with children ages prenatal to 5 years. Head Start focuses on the development of the “whole” child and family. This means, we help families explore children’s overall health, mental health, social-emotional, and physical well-being as well as focusing on the typical intellectual development of children, including children with disabilities. Head Start believes parents are their child’s first and most important teacher. Therefore, we support parents to better understand early childhood development as well as support them to assess and set goals to reach their dreams for life-long outcomes and success. Research has proven children and families who attended Head Start were much more likely to become highly engaged and productive citizens as adults. ECKAN believes most people are doing the very best they know how to do. The question is, how do we begin to know those things unknown to us? Head Start offers intentional support to those who open their minds to ask, wonder, and learn. Go to http://www.eckan.org/headstart/ to learn what services are provided in each area. There is contact information available on the site as well as an opportunity to enter information for someone to contact them. Anyone can call 785-242-7450 to talk to an ECKAN employee. For information regarding Head Start in Coffey County, contact Kathy Sage at 620-203-0778.

Junior High and High School students are required to turn in assignments for the core classes (For High School Students, these are classes that are required for graduation and will have required work): Math, English, Social Science, and Science. Grades are being taken in these classes and zeroes are being put in the gradebook. Students are expected to complete these assignments or they risk failing the class. and repeating it next year or Seniors risk not graduating. The grade book will close on April 29th for seniors and May 14th for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Teachers were encouraged in the 4/15/20 faculty meeting to update grades as often as possible as the end of the second semester approaches. Teachers will begin to fill missing assignments with zeros to keep grades as accurate as possible. Students please be contacting your teachers in any required classes that you have fallen behind in!

USD 243 Lebo-Waverly Thank you to everyone for your patience as we deal with our building closure. This has been a difficult situation for everyone involved in education. There is no place we would rather be than in our buildings with our students. The USD 243 Administrative team met today to begin working on our Continuous Learning Plan. Several things came from this video meeting: There will be NO face-to-face contact between staff and students! Starting Monday, the following teams will meet to continue developing the District CLP: Daycare - 2nd Grades 3rd - 5th Grades 6th - 8th Grades 9th - 11th Grades 12th Graders Each team will consist of a district administrator and all teachers in the listed grade levels We are planning on providing educational services starting Monday March 30th. We will be meeting with our teachers in small groups on Monday to discuss what this plan will look like. You can expect further updates next week. We have had some questions pertaining to personal items left at school. We will be putting together a plan to be able to get these items back to students as quickly as possible. More information will be available next week. More information regarding the Continuous Learning Plan will be announced as soon as possible. Once again, thank you for your patience in these difficult times. If you have questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact your building administrator! We are all in this together!

Thursday the continuity commission will release guidance to schools regarding continuing to educate and how to work with our families. Our administrators will meet online Friday to continue hatching a plan. Keep in mind...Safety first! Do not put yourself in proximity of other people. No face to face. No personal contact. Stay away from other people. This is for your safety, as well as, their safety. Learning to read and write is secondary, at this time, to your health and the health and safety of others. Our #1 charge is to provide a safe environment for students and staff. Right now that means stay away from other people as much as possible. Please do not do anything to cause people to come near you or come near each other. We will, in time, get processes in place for education and meals. For now, be patient! Sincerely, Corey Reese, Superintendent Lebo Waverly USD 243

There is a phrase called "Flattening the Curve". A link to a video that explains the concept is posted below. We need everyone to self isolate as much as you can! We need to take universal precautions such as hygiene and hand-washing. Encourage everyone to keep their kids as isolated as possible. Stay away from places people gather. This is kind of like a full court press, everyone has to be committed to slowing this disease down! If 4 out 5 people cooperate, it will be layups for this virus. We need everyone to self social isolate in order to slow this thing down. https://youtu.be/QIuzLf9f5WI

I have meetings tomorrow with County Emergency, Health, and School Leaders. I will let you know what comes from this meeting. Moving forward all district activities are cancelled including sports practice. There will be no sports or activity practice this week. There is a phrase called "Flattening the Curve". I will send you a video that explains the concept. We need everyone to self isolate as much as you can. We need to take universal precautions such as hygiene and hand washing. Encourage everyone to keep their kids as isolated as possible. Stay away from places people gather. This is kind of like a full court press, everybody has to be committed to slowing this disease down. If 4 out 5 people cooperate, It will be layups for this virus. Is your child missing their jacket, coat, sweatpants, etc? We have a large amount of clothes in the lost and found at both the elementary and high school. We have tried numerous times to give them back to the rightful owner with no luck. Parents please check your child’s closet to see if any of these items belong to you. We have some pretty expensive items and we hate for them to not make their way back home.

Congratulations Quintin Combes & Cali Doudna Rudd Foundation Announces 51 Finalists for the 2020 Rudd Scholarship Wichita, KS. (01/16/2020) The Rudd Foundation is proud to announce 51 finalists for the 2020 Rudd Scholarship. Lebo High seniors Quintin Combes & Cali Doudna are among the 51 finalists! These highly talented, Kansas high school seniors were chosen from a record-breaking number of applicants and will advance to the next level of competition. Each of these finalists will be invited to Wichita to interview in person in the coming weeks for one of 25 full scholarships to attend either Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University or Wichita State University. We expect to announce the 25 winners later in March. About the Rudd Scholarship The Rudd Scholarship is a renewable, 4-year program that covers any remaining cost of attendance after all other aid, grants, and scholarships are applied to a student’s account. Cost of attendance only includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, and room and board. By removing financial barriers to a college education, chosen scholars are expected to achieve a high level of excellence on campus in preparing themselves to be leaders in their profession and in their communities after graduation.

Extra law enforcement will be on patrol making sure that you are properly buckled up ahead of the busiest travel seasons of the year. This season's annual "click-it or ticket" high visibility campaign kicked off Friday. Law enforcement agencies across the state have extra units on the street looking for those who are not wearing a seat belt. Last year, 127 unrestrained people died in traffic accidents -- many of those deaths could have been prevented with one simple click of the seat belt.
