Dear Parents/Guardians of USD 243 students,
We would like to welcome all families back for the second semester of the 2020-2021 school year. Classes will resume on January 4, 2021 as regularly scheduled. As with the first semester, it is our desire to be able to offer in-class instruction for the entire school year. This can be accomplished if everyone is actively participating in COVID-19 mitigation protocols (face masks, social distancing, washing hands, etc.).
As a reminder: Keep your child home if he/she is sick (running a fever, cough, or other COVID related symptoms.). Please communicate with the school or your healthcare provider if you have questions about a sick child. If your child has recently (during the break) tested positive for COVID-19 or has been exposed to a positive case, please contact the school to determine a return to school date.
All students are required to return to face-to-face instruction this semester unless they are medically compromised and USD 243 administration has approved your child for continued Remote Learning.
We would like to thank everyone for your cooperation, flexibility, and understanding as we continue to navigate through this pandemic.
Again, it is our goal to be in school and remain in school. With everyone’s help and support, we feel this goal can be accomplished.
If you have additional questions, please contact your child's attendance center.
Sincerely,
USD 243 Administration Team

The Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors voted Tuesday, December 8, to allow for up to two parents/guardians per participant families as allowed by local board of education or health department restrictions. USD 243 Lebo-Waverly will comply with this directive. No “substitutes” can be used for a parent/guardian if they are unable to attend a contest.
All spectators must be masked and worn correctly the entire time in the facility, even if they are socially distanced.
Please remember, the reason restricted attendance is necessary is to minimize exposure opportunities and support school and community health.
Parents/guardians are there to support their child while in competition. We are asking all parents/guardians to arrive at the estimated time of your child’s game and leave shortly after the game is completed.
There will be no tickets given to the athletes and instead a pass list will be provided. ID’s matt be required at away contests.

WINTER SPORTS TO PROCEED WITH GAMES IN DECEMBER; NO FANS ALLOWED UNTIL JAN. 28
The Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors voted on Tuesday, November24, to start the winter sports season as scheduled! Competition can begin on December 1.
No spectators will be permitted at competition from
Dec. 1 to Jan. 28, 2021.
Starting on Jan. 29 through the remainder of the winter regular season and postseason, attendance shall be limited to allow for appropriate distancing for the facility and in accordance with local admission and attendance policies.
The Board of Directors also voted to require face covering for all participants at game sites. This includes athletes, coaches, officials, spectators, support staff and all others attending or participating in school activities. The face covering must be worn in the manner it is intended for the purpose of COVID-19 risk mitigation. The only exceptions are athletes during the time they are competing and for officials during active play.
This ruling applies to all KSHSAA sponsored activities, including Junior High!
USD 243 Lebo-Waverly will make every effort to make games available via live streaming. We are currently working on the NFHS system and hope to have it up as soon as possible. If this system isn’t online, some type of live streaming will be available.

Everyday, we see more and more COVID-19 cases being reported. Along with those growing numbers, more and more schools are required to go total Remote. Everyday we can have students attend school is a blessing, but we all know that In-Person attendance could be put on hold at any time! To better prepare students and staff for the possibility of Remote Learning, USD 243 will have planning and preparation days for students in grades 6-12 on Monday, November 30th and Tuesday, December 1st. Students will attend class from home, via their school issued device, for every class period.
If your student doesn’t have internet access you should let your building principal or Doug Piper know as soon as possible.
Daycare/PK through Grade 5 will attend their classes as normal. At this time, there are no plans to go online for grades 5 and below. In the future, if we go online for elementary student's instruction, we will set aside time to organize that process. More information will be provided if/when this time comes.

The Board of Education meeting scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9 has been postponed until Monday, Nov. 23 at 7:00pm at the BOE Office.

Correction, Friday October 16th.

Dear USD 243 Families,
I would like to welcome everyone back for the 2020-21 school year. Our sincere hope is to provide an educational experience that is as close to normal as possible for you and your family. The best way I can think of to keep school close to normal is to make individual choices that help mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
USD 243 and Coffey County have developed many plans, procedures, and policies to best protect ourselves and others around us. Most, if not all, of the planning documents can be found on the District and School Website. Our leaders have tried to anticipate as many scenarios as possible that might be cause for concern to our students, staff, and families. School will definitely look and feel different.
In order to keep our schools open and to keep each other as safe as possible, we feel these procedures are extremely important. Some people may not agree with all of the requirements that have been developed. These procedures are necessary if schools are to open and to continue to operate as normally as possible. Please try to be flexible and understanding as we navigate these uncharted waters. Most people agree that children need to return to school. Our hope is that these special considerations are not long-term. Where things go from here is up to all of us.
Please keep your child home if they are sick with a Fever, Cough, etc. Communicate with the School or your health care provider if you have questions about an ill child. We do have some essential guidance and protocols available on USD243KS.org
The school district has adopted several safety measures that are recommended by the Coffey County Health Department, Kansas Health Department, as well as, the CDC. Safety Measures include but are not limited to: wearing face masks indoors while at school, social distancing greater than 6 feet, temperature screenings of students and staff, better air filtration and circulation, and many more measures that are too numerous to mention.
Once again, it is our goal to be in school in person as normal as possible. We can do this together. We need everyone’s support. Cooperation is critical.
If you have any questions please contact your child’s school attendance center. Sincerely,
Corey Reese

ECKAN Head Start provides FREE early childhood development services to families who qualify. Services vary in each county and community, based upon the needs identified through a community assessment process. Families can sign up for the following service options:
Home-Based 90-minute, weekly home visits for families with children ages prenatal to 5 years.
Head Start focuses on the development of the “whole” child and family. This means, we help families explore children’s overall health, mental health, social-emotional, and physical well-being as well as focusing on the typical intellectual development of children, including children with disabilities. Head Start believes parents are their child’s first and most important teacher. Therefore, we support parents to better understand early childhood development as well as support them to assess and set goals to reach their dreams for life-long outcomes and success. Research has proven children and families who attended Head Start were much more likely to become highly engaged and productive citizens as adults.
ECKAN believes most people are doing the very best they know how to do. The question is, how do we begin to know those things unknown to us? Head Start offers intentional support to those who open their minds to ask, wonder, and learn. Go to http://www.eckan.org/headstart/ to learn what services are provided in each area. There is contact information available on the site as well as an opportunity to enter information for someone to contact them. Anyone can call 785-242-7450 to talk to an ECKAN employee.

Good Afternoon,
The USD 243 Lebo-Waverly administration and staff are working hard on our continuing learning plan. I would like to thank all of you that responded to our internet question the last couple of days. We are working on a solution for those that don’t have reliable internet access and should have a plan in the next few days. What I need from you now, is how many of you would need a device to connect to the internet. We are looking at checking out district devices for those that don’t have any type of device (computer, tablet). Please contact me at 785-229-5732 via text or phone message if you would need a device for your child to receive continuing learning.
We will continue to plan and keep you informed as we move forward in these uncharted times!

Lebo-Waverly schools are in the process of putting together our continuous learning plan. Please call or text 785-229-5732 if you DO NOT have reliable internet access at home! f you text this information, please let us know who the text is from.

Thursday the continuity commission will release guidance to schools regarding continuing to educate and how to work with our families. Our administrators will meet online Friday to continue hatching a plan.
Keep in mind...Safety first!
Do not put yourself in proximity of other people. No face to face. No personal contact. Stay away from other people. This is for your safety, as well as, their safety.
Learning to read and write is secondary, at this time, to your health and the health and safety of others.
Our #1 charge is to provide a safe environment for students and staff. Right now that means stay away from other people as much as possible. Please do not do anything to cause people to come near you or come near each other.
We will, in time, get processes in place for education and meals. For now, be patient!
Sincerely,

Governor Kelly announced the closure of ALL Kansas schools for the rest of the school year, due to COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus). We will keep you updated and informed on how USD 243 Lebo-Wavely will handle the event.

The Governor will hold a news conference in the 4:00-4:30 time frame with VERY important information about our school. PLEASE tune in to your local media to receive this info!

Everyone,
Randy Watson, Commissioner of Education, has recommended closure of schools that are coming off spring break this week. The Governor supports this recommendation.
I have meetings tomorrow with County Emergency, Health, and School Leaders. I will let you know what comes from this meeting.
Moving forward all district activities are cancelled including sports practice. There will be no sports or activity practice this week.
There is a phrase called "Flattening the Curve". I will send you a video that explains the concept. We need everyone to self isolate as much as you can. We need to take universal precautions such as hygiene and hand washing. Encourage everyone to keep their kids as isolated as possible. Stay away from places people gather.
This is kind of like a full court press, everybody has to be committed to slowing this disease down. If 4 out 5 people cooperate, It will be layups for this virus. We need everybody to self social isolate in order to slow this thing down.
We are on spring break but need to have the mindset that we are closed due to a very fast moving and infectious illness.
Sincerely,
--

RE: Suspension of Spring Activities/Athletics
COVID 19 – Updated information for spring activities
Effective Monday, March 16, all spring sports and activities are suspended through Sunday, March 22. This includes cancellation of all practices and competitions for this week. This prohibition is consistent with KSDE and governmental guidance and may be extended, should conditions warrant. Please note spring sports team members are prohibited from club or outside team participation and practice during this period. Not only would such outside participation be contrary to handbook rule, it would be contrary to the very reason activities are cancelled during the time we seek to mitigate potential transfer of the contagion.
