Remote Learning FAQ for Parents

Q. Will my child be online, live with their class all day, every day?
   A. No. Elementary teachers will have set times in their schedule when they are doing live instruction. This may be 10-30 min. (approx.) per subject daily. Some subjects may be longer or have multiple online live sessions in a day. Students should log in during these times to see live instruction, interact with the teacher, ask questions, etc.
JH/HS classes will follow their regular class schedule. Teachers will be online with live lessons for approximately 30 min. per subject/class period.
All live sessions will be recorded and loaded into the class Google Classroom.

Q. How much learning time is my child expected to complete daily?
   A. The district requirement of learning time (a combination of instruction from the teacher live or video recordings and independent skill practice/building activities) is 6.5 hours daily or a total of 32.5 hours weekly. This is set to meet the requirement of learning time, by the Kansas Department of Education of 1,116 hours per school year.

Q. What does “learning time” mean?
   A. The 6.5 hours of required learning time will be made up of a combination of live/recorded instructional videos, extra practice or skill building activities, tests/quizzes. The total of 6.5 hours will include time for ALL subjects (English Language Arts (reading), Math, Science, Social Studies, Music, PE, Guidance, etc.)

Q. What will be expected of my child when the teacher is NOT live?
    A. When the teacher is not doing live instruction, your child will have assigned work, activities, skill building, and a variety of other activities that they are to complete independently, under supervision of the parent/guardian.

Q. What if my child is not available to get online during a live instruction time?
    A. If your child cannot get on during a live instruction time, those videos will be available for viewing at a time that works for your child or family through Google Classroom.

Q. Will attendance be taken daily for remote learners?
    A. Yes, attendance will be logged daily by the classroom teacher. Each teacher will provide specifics for how attendance will be taken. For JH/HS students, attendance will be taken for each course/hour they are enrolled in. Parents are to record their student(s) learning time in the Remote Learning Daily Log. The log must be turned in weekly to waverlyremotelog@usd243ks.org

Q. Am I required to turn in a log of what assignments and activities my child does daily?
    A. Yes, it is a district and state requirement for students participating in Remote Learning to complete and turn in a daily log of learning activities. These logs can be submitted daily or weekly. A log is expected for each day. Logs are to be submitted to waverlyremotelog@usd243ks.org

Q. What if my child has technology questions?
    A. If you have any technology related questions and need support, please contact your child’s classroom teacher. If they don’t know the answer, contact dpiper@usd243ks.org and we will assist you as soon as possible.

Q. What if we want our child to be enrolled in the Remote Learning program, but we do not have internet at home?
    A. Please contact our technology support staff at dpiper@usd243ks.org and we will assist you with getting a wifi hotspot or an alternative. If internet coverage is not available in your area, the principal and classroom teacher(s) will work with you to develop a Modified Remote Learning program. This may include work packets or an alternative.

Q. Does my child get extra time to complete assignments?
    A. No, assignments will be due at the same time as assignments given to students that are attending in person. In some situations, reasonable accommodations may be made with the classroom teacher to extend a due date. All Google Classroom assignments will have a due date attached to them.

Q. What is my role as a parent to an elementary Remote Learner?
    A. Parents and guardians play a key role in their student’s success in any learning environment, but even more so in an at-home remote learning environment. A parent or guardian’s role during Remote Learning is to be your child’s Educational Coach. When students are not watching a live recording or teacher video, you will be supervising your child’s learning. You will need to be available for ongoing contact with your student’s teachers by phone, e-mail, text, and/or video conferencing. Additionally, you should contact teachers to keep them informed of any anticipated absences or needs.

Q. What if my child decides they don't like remote learning?
   A. If you are contemplating a change in learning models, please contact your child’s principal to discuss options. In most situations, changes from Remote Learning to in-person/traditional learning will not be allowed until the end of the semester.

Q. Why isn’t my child’s teacher answering my calls/texts/emails?
    A. Teachers will be available to answer calls/texts/emails from 7:45-3:45 daily, anything outside of that time frame will be at the teacher’s discretion. You can expect a response within 24 hours of your initial contact. Most communication can be expected before and after school and during teacher plan times, as they are available.

Q. What will help my child to be successful as a Remote Learner?
    A. Support- for your child and his/her classroom teacher(s).
Communication- with your child and his/her classroom teacher(s).
Flexibility- by everyone involved in your child’s learning, including yourself.
