As the Waverly Bulldogs bus to Dodge City for the 2018 State Basketball Tournament, it marks the 10th time Coach Mike Hevel has lead WHS to a State tournament! Coach Hevel begin his WHS career in the 1976-77 season. In his second year, he led the Bulldogs to a 19-5 3rd place finish. The 1981-82 season saw a WHS first, a State Championship! The Bulldogs defeated Wheatland 66-58.
WHS made it’s 3rd trip to the State Tournament in 1987-88 losing in the 1st round. With a 25-2 record, the Waverly Boys recorded a 3rd place finish in 1989-90, Coach Hevel’s 4th state appearance. 1990-91 saw the Bulldogs make their 5th trip to state under Coach Hevel.
The 1991-92 season was a season of perfection, 25-0 and Coach Hevel’s 2nd State Title in 6 trips to state! Coach and the Bulldogs made their 7th appearance in 1995-96, dropping their first round game. The 8th state trip in 1997-98 saw the ‘Dogs take 4th place in Hays. The 9th state trip in 2004-05 earned the Bulldogs and Coach Hevel another 4th place trophy.
